GPS Communication Technologies ...

Most GPS tracking systems currently use a one-way satellite connection used to receive GPS coordinates from a network of 21 global satellites (See How GPS Works) and transmit them via land-based networks. There are some systems that utilize a true two-way satellite connection, however, they are much more costly for users.

Most GPS tracking systems on the market utilize a ground-based network to transmit the data. There are several communication technologies to transmit this data. Currently the following technologies are in use:


Microburst, Cellemetry, CDPD, Mobitex, GSM, GPRS, iDEN, CDMA, and ReFLEX

A key issue is the imminent shutdown of the CDPD network provided by the carriers AT&T Wireless and Verizon. All companies currently using this technology are turning toward other technologies to transmit data, most notably GSM and GPRS. In addition, Sprint's recent acquisition of Nextel are forcing users of Nextel's iDEN network to upgrade to Sprint's CDMA phones and equipment. (click on links for press coverage)

Our high-usage tracking system for vehicles uses the GSM & GPRS networks. Our Little Brother system uses the CDPD network. We will be have a Little Brother GSM unit April 2006..
